Bato Onsen Hot Spring Village sits in the old town of Nakagawa in the eastmost of Tochigi right next to the Ibaraki border. The name comes from the old Bato Town, named after ""Batoin"" by Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the great historic figure well known for the stories of Mito Komon in the history of Japan.
The hot spring was discovered on a winter day in the Edo period (1860) as the particular spot of the snowy white river came with no snow. The hot spring has a rich history of 150 years, offering epic views of the Nikko Mountain range and Mt. Nasu.
